Ubisoft’s ‘Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’ Set to Launch on December 7th 2023
The release of Ubisoft’s open-world Avatar game is imminent, as we were given a detailed preview of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora at the Summer Game Fest preview event. James Cameron made an appearance in a pre-recorded segment, hinting at the introduction of “new environments, flora and fauna, and characters” in the game.
The cinematic trailer shows how this story fits into the Avatar movies. In short, it spans the events of both games, with the main character being kidnapped during the events of the first film and being trained by human intruders. After the events at the end of Avatar, you’re cryogenically frozen… then 15 years later to fight the RDA’s ongoing attack.
The game itself is an open-world first-person action-adventure where you combine Na’vi skills and weapons with human attack rates and a casual rocket launcher or two. (Massive, the studio behind the game, is most recently known for its work on Tom Clancy’s The Division 2.)
Your Na’vi instincts act like a scanner to detect enemies and environmental features. You can grow your character to suit your own play style, crafting weapons and items from resources and upgrading your own skills as you see fit. The skill tree includes improvements to agility and other attributes related to your deeper understanding of your Na’vi heritage…interacting with plants and other Na’vi.
It wouldn’t be an Avatar affair without the ability to connect with sentient animals that you can ride. The trailer teases the ability to ride horses as well as your own spawn. You’ll be able to feed and adapt your partner when you’re not flying down waterfalls. Frontiers of Pandora features a new west never seen in the movies, where you’ll encounter never-before-seen Na’vi clans, including a secret clan of healers.
Frontiers of Pandora will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and oddly enough, Luna. (Yes, Luna!) December 7, 2023.
